Aurora by Reliant NRG Lights Up Downtown Dallas

Energy company Reliant NRG recently powered a truly spectacular event in Downtown Dallas Arts District. The Aurora Lights Show was a massive multi media contemporary art exhibit brought to Dallas through a partnership with the nonprofit AT&T Performing Arts Center. The memorable event was hallmarked by contributions from local and international artists selected by a team of renowned curators, and was impressive that likely people will be talking about it for years to come. Let’s hope my little friend Violet thinks so too. She and her mom Bianca filled in for me at this remarkable display. Here’s what they had to say about it:

When I read that an estimated 50,000+ people attended Aurora I was not surprised. My 5year old, Violet and I braved the crowds!

We got there early, as you do with a little, and checked out the scene before the lights came on. As Reliant guests, we previewed their 3D experience ahead of the masses. What a cool show!

Violet kept her 3D glasses on the entire time and leaned over to whisper, “Mom, this is so cool! It’s like everything is coming to you!”

Violet’s favorite part of the evening was hearing the opera singer and seeing the 3D projection react to her voice on the Wylie Theater. The crowd was so thick that we couldn’t get close enough to see her up close.

My favorite exhibit was the Scenocosme interactive sound/light installation.

Scenocosme Urban Lights Contacts

“In a sensory staging, spectators’ bodies are transformed into sonorous human instruments. When the first person puts his hand on the shiny ball, his body becomes reactive to other living bodies. When that same person is alone, there is no reaction. She/he must invite another person to touch her/his skin. Each touch generates variable sounds and lights which evolve according to the proximity of the electrostatic contacts and of the spectators.”

It was amazing to see strangers reaching out to each other to create a new sound. No personal barriers – people of all races and economic backgrounds sharing the experience.

Of the 19 blocks of downtown Dallas that were transformed in to art installations, we stayed around 4-5 city blocks. There was no way to see everything, well not with a 5-year old in tow!

I hope Reliant hosts this amazing show again next year so I can experience it too! Thanks Bianca for representing MommyUpgrade with this family fun event. MommyUpgrade received VIP passes to attend Aurora and share our experience. All opinions are our own.
