Discover the Maya and more at Perot Museum this summer

“I’m bored.”

Have you heard that yet? I’ve got the cure. Head over to the Perot Museum and check out some brain boosting programs to crush that boredom bug. Perot Museum invited the media in last week to see what’s in store for fun summer learning. (Check out perotmuseum.org/summer for all the details.) I took the munchkin, because who wouldn’t want to have a free day at the museum?! We stayed way longer than we intended and had a blast. Here’s what you’ll want to check out.

Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed (presented in English and Spanish) where history, mystery and culture come together in the largest traveling exhibition about the Maya ever to tour the U.S. Decipher hieroglyphs, build arches, and explore an underworld cave, ancient burial site, nearly 250 authentic artifacts, a mural room and more. This highly interactive exhibition is on display until September 4th, presented by Highland Capital Management.

The Cupcake really enjoyed making her own hieroglyphs with her chosen Mayan name and birthday, and learning about how the Maya laid out their villages, and pretending to be a Mayan dentist.

I especially enjoyed the artifacts.

For example, this is quite possibly, the worlds first Scentsy warmer. It’s an incense burner from ages ago.

We also watched Dream Big in 3D. Before it started, we were warned that we might tear up watching this touching movie about how engineers are making our worlds better, and that we might actually be cheering on something called, “Stinky.” BTW, Predictions accurate. From the world’s tallest building to underwater robots and a solar car race across Australia, Dream Big 3D – narrated by Jeff Bridges – celebrates the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small, and reveals the heart that drives engineers to create better lives for people around the world. A MacGillivray Freeman Film in partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers, Dream Big 3D runs approximately 40 minutes. Go see this.

There are two other movies that we’ll go back and see: Walking with Dinosaurs in 3D (narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch!) and features two of the dinosaurs discovered by Perot Museum paleontologists. Wild Africa 3D (narrated by another favorite: Helena Bonham Carter), whisks you off to Africa to see fantastic places, meet amazing creatures and discover this enchantment that is “the most dramatic continent on Earth.” Hurry, because this one runs only through September 4.

We also hung around for the media preview of the newest “test your skills” interactive game in the Sports Hall. Watch as the mascots of FC Dallas, the Dallas Stars, and the T-Rex from the Perot Museum, face off.

And then for even more fun, the big guns in the Goalie Challenge with Dallas Stars Goalie Kari Lehtonen

and FC Dallas Goalie Chris Seitz

paired up to test their response skills against each other and their tiny fans.

And did you know there’s a new Architecture Tour? I know you’re wondering about the “skin” on the building and whether that piece sticking out was an afterthought. Did you know that 20 percent of the museum is made of recycled materials? Tours last 1 – 1.5 hours and are available for group of 1 – 20 for $5 per person.

There’s so much more going on this summer, from Discovery Days, (experiments, activities and perfornames with scientist, educator san artists), Sleepovers, Discovery Camps. Check it all out at PerotMuseum.Org/Summer!
