DSM’s The Sound of Music is a “must see” this holiday season

Mornings at Chez Perot are typically a highly synchronized event. Late nights throw off our pace and the skewed schedule can be a little stressful and yell-y.

I was especially dreading this morning because last night –a school night none-the-less – the Cupcake and I went to see the Dallas Summer Musical’s, The Sound of Music show which put us home a full 3 hours past the Cupcake’s bedtime.

As you might guess, when I flipped that light on this morning, I was met with the scowl of all scowls. HOWEVER, it quickly melted away when I started softly singing… “Doe, a deer, a female deer. Ray, a drop of golden sun, Me a name, I call myself…. “ The Cupcake immediately joined in unison from there we were the singing Von Perot family all the way out the door of the house and even through school drop off. The pugs even gave us a little side-eye for so much joviality in the morning.

We were still smiling this morning from being able to share a bit of the magic that has enchanted audiences for 50 years. The original Sound of Music continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.

Probably like you, I grew up watching the beloved classic on TV every Christmas. It’s like an old friend you look forward to seeing when you travel home for the holidays. Our viewing tradition fell off while the Cupcake was little because The Sound of Music is a long, somewhat complicated to explain movie for a little one! I suspected the shorter musical might be a great appetizer to the real deal.

It was a good mom move. This kid. Loves. Musicals. And what a special daughter date it turned out to be for the both of us!

Even though I knew the whole story by heart, I fell in love all over again with this production of The Sound of Music directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien and starring Broadway’s Ben Davis, Ashley Brown and newcomer Kerstin Anderson! I’m always a little leery that I’ll be disappointed when someone tries to remake an icon, but this heartwarming production did NOT disappoint.

The Cupcake (age 7) was equally enchanted from the second the curtain went up, we both commented on how good the young child actors were, in addition to the sage professionals that commanded the stage. During the second Act, she leaned over after every single scene and said,

Her: “Is it over?”

Me: “No.”

Her: “GOOD!”

I had to fill in a few of the details for her (prior to this, Nazi Germany was something she’d never heard of) but it didn’t matter. When the curtain ultimately went down, she was crushed at the finality of it. She asked if we could please buy the movie for both ipad and disc so she can watch it in the car? Thankfully, the nice folks at DSM gave us a commemorative book about The Sound of Music and the real Von Trapp family to tide her over on the ride home.

This musical was exactly the time-out we needed, and a perfect deep breath before the craziness of the holidays is in full swing. I say this to you as a friend, please go to see The Sound of Music. You’ll be singing along with every song, there are NO COMMERCIALS to endure, it’s shorter than the television version, and if you close your eyes, you’ll almost swear a young Julie Andrews herself was on stage. The show is at Music Hall at Fair Park through November 22nd, and will come back to Fort Worth’s Bass Performance Hall August 17 – 21 of next year. But don’t wait that long, just mark that down as an encore performance.

You can get tickets via Dallas Summer Musicals here, and read more about the wonderful production here.

THANK YOU DSM for inviting us to attend opening night. I was provided complimentary media tickets to review this wonderful production. All opinions are entirely my own.
