Don’t garage sale, Varage Sale!

This is a sponsored post, however I do use this app and think it’s cool.
All opinions are my own.

I don’t know about you, but I always have a few of piles of stuff working in my garage: give to friends, give to charity, garage sale.

Unfortunately the garage sale in our neighborhood is only twice a year and it always, always conflicts with a soccer game. That means the pile just sits there and grows.

Ugh.

So my options for selling it are:

  • Craig’s List – but you never know if you’re going to get scammed. And let’s be honest, the interface is pretty bare bones.
  • Ebay – clearly safer and some accountability with the reviews, but the packing and shipping seems like sooooooo much efffffffffort.
  • Neighborhood sale sites on Facebook – but I am so awkward selling to neighbors. I always feel compelled to just give it to them to be neighborly even if I don’t know them or barely know them. I’m conflicted with what if they don’t like it or they feel like I priced it too high? I certainly don’t want to have that be my first impression with someone I live near and possibly will run into on the regular, “Oh there’s that girl who wanted FIFTY dollars for that ugly framed horse picture!” Geez, that’s even worse if I do know them.

Enter Varage Sale – the app.

It’s a beautiful three-way mashup of Craig’s List, Ebay, and Facebook.

Here’s why:

With Varage Sale, you register with your general location and join neighborhoods (like Craig’s List). The neighborhood options are growing all the time. In addition to the many DFW communities already, 7 new communities were added just this month:

When you sell something, the exchange happens in person (or porch pickups) near you. The app uses location technology to sort the news feed based on what’s closest to you. The more people posting and shopping within a community, the more local your experience will be.

After a sale, your exchange can be “reviewed” by the parties involved (like Ebay) – so you can choose to buy from people who others recommend.

It’s linked to your Facebook profile so you know it’s a real person, but you’re not putting your business out there for all your neighbors to see in their notifications.

What I really LOVE about it, is how easy it is to add items (take photo with phone, enter description and price, post), and that you can search and sort your items by category. Even better — you can customize your newsfeed to show just what you’re really interested in. I, for sure, do not need baby stuff. I would however, be interested in girls size 8 clothing or soccer equipment. Boom. And if I find someone who’s junk I really love, I can follow them in my favorites. Here’s how to tailor your feed.

Here’s a couple of screen shots from my phone.

In my newsfeed – I hate that these purple boots aren’t in size 1!
