How to get better sleep

50% of Americans feel that they do not get enough sleep. Since getting MORE sleep is probably not going to happen until I retire, it’s time to look at ways to get BETTER sleep. Quality trumps quantity, right???

I was recently invited to share these tips on WFAA’s Good Morning Texas – but there was so much I would have liked to add!

If you’d like to view the segment, it’s below, and following it is a little more detail about the products featured and links for where you can order them.

Starting with the most obvious area… the bed, I want to introduce you to these beautiful linens from Coyuchi.

Coyuchi sheets
Coyuchi linens
Coyuchi blanket

Coyuchi is the first company to bring 100% organic, all natural bedding to the US, and these diamond watercolor sheets are free of toxic dyes, bleaches and harsh finishing that you’ll find during the manufacture of traditional bedding. Today, most bedding products are made with bright synthetic dyes and complex chemicals that can have harmful effects on people over time, especially those with sensitive skin. Coyuchi cotton is certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), internationally recognized as the toughest organic-textile standard. Because these sheets are all natural, they actually get softer with each washing. The price point on these is between $58 – $248 and you can purchase these and many other beautiful styles from Coyuchi.com

Beneath the sheets, you may want to consider an Airweave mattress topper.

Airweave mattress topper

The core of this topper consists of 90% air, so it’s super lightweight. It wicks heat and moisture away from your body, allowing for a more consistent body temperature and more sound sleep. The resilient nature of the topper makes it easier to turn over, and reduces the pressure points on your body. The topper we featured is a portable version that you can take with you on an airplane, to the beach, or even poolside. It’s no wonder these fab toppers are favorites of Olympic Gold medalists, professional athletes and on-the-road celebrities. You can order a topper for yourself at Airweave.com. They run approximately $570.

And what about that funky blue pillow that you saw? That’s truly a woman’s best friend.

Juverest pillow

The Juverest pillow was designed by a plastic surgeon, Dr. Gosel Anson, and is a multi-patented pillow engineered specifically to reduce the amount of pressure your pillow puts on your face – because that pillow smash creates wrinkles! This is better than relying on Botox and cheaper too at $179! It has the same support as your traditional pillow, but fewer contact points so you can avoid that full on face smush which is known to create and worsen dreaded facial wrinkles. In an independent study of users, 89% said they saw an improvement in their skin over an 8-week period. You can order your Juverest pillow from Juverest.com.

I’ll wager a bet that most of you parents have mastered the art of the bedtime routine for your kids – but what about yourself? Two of the keys to a good night’s sleep is creating that optimal sleep environment and reducing stimulating activity. You don’t think twice about dropping your kid into a bath at nighttime, try starting a routine for yourself with a bath accompanied by scented lavender soap.

Lavender soap

Research has proven that lavender is helpful in reducing anxiety and insomnia and I can’t think of a better place to melt away the day that in a warm scented bath. When I spray a lavender linen spray on my bed, I can’t ever get the Cupcake out of it, so I’ll be getting some of these Lavender sachets from Ten Thousand Villages to put into our pillows too.

Lavender Sachet

Both of the products I showed on air are from Ten Thousand Villages which is one of the largest Fair Trade organizations in the world benefitting artisans in 38 countries. Not only do they smell incredible, you feel good about purchasing a product with such notable origins. The soap is $5 and the sachet set is $12 and can be ordered from TenThousandVillages.com.

I like wine as much as the rest of you, but it’s not really a recommended bedtime beverage. Before you slip under those sheets, you’ll want to avoid all the fun stuff, (nicotine, caffeine, alcohol…) and replace it with your new version of fun: a cup of herbal or chamomile tea. I presented two affordable options from Carrington Farms Organics that will do the trick.

You can purchase them both from Walmart Carrington Farms for only $2.14 for a 20 count package.

Being the gadget girl that I am, I was totally swooning over the KRUPS electronic tea kettle.

KRUPS personal tea kettle

What I love most about it, is that you can use both tea bags or loose tea – which takes the mystery out of brewing a great cup of tea when it doesn’t come in a ready made bag! This personal tea kettle can hold up to 1 liter of water and the internal water circulation system for infusing tea is fun to watch. You can purchase your cute kettle at Walmart tea kettle currently rollback priced at $37.78.

Lastly, Carrie asked about the midnight snack. Sadly, chocolate ice cream is not your best option either. 🙁  Since Blue Bell is off the table for now anyway, try something a little more hearty and heart-heathy. Viki’s granola is a natural sweet treat that’s gluten-free, dairy-free and 100% organic.

Viki's Granola

The delicious flavors of blueberry almond, maple cranberry or original honey would pair well with a cup of greek yogurt and tide you over until morning. You can load up on Viki’s granola at Whole Foods Market (check local stores for availability).

And that’s a wrap! Thanks for all your kind words after the show. Once I got my groove on, it was a lot of fun. I hope there’s something I presented that will help you have a better nights’ sleep too!

Sweet dreams!
