Reliant Kite Relay Media Event

Reliant Kite Relay Media Event for the Trinity River Wind Festival

Sadly, Matthew McConaughey was not there. Matthew McConaughey – the Hollywood dreamboat with the sexy Texas voice behind the Reliant Energy radio commercials. I could listen to him talk about electricity, wind energy, river rocks, pipe cleaners, whatever, all day long.

Matthew McConaughey in the house would just have been the cherry on top to a fun – albeit – crazy Kite Relay Media Event that I participated in a couple weeks ago (yes, I am terribly behind on posting to the site). Lured by the promise of a donation to my favorite charity (the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundtion), and the sheer absurdity of it all, I valiantly raced through 5 stations where I competed against other media folks to:

On your mark, get set, GO!

1) put a kite together – and tie a key to it

Putting a kite together.

2) build a pinwheel – a la Martha Stewart (I had that one in the bag)

3) answer wind energy trivia (my downfall as I left my study sheet at home. I need some tutoring Matthew, please?)

4) don a Ben Franklin costume

What the heck?!

5) tie a parachute to ourselves and dash across the finish line with kite, pinwheel and Franklin wardrobe in tow

Kite + Parachute + Pinwheel + Ben Franklin garb = Finish line

It was the most fun I’ve had on a Friday in a long time. And in a photo finish, I beat Mommy Blog rivals Real Posh Mom and Fab Find Foodie. See? (I am in pink)

Me = Pink, Real Posh Mom = white. Man in black = finish line.

Ha!

While I was “in it to win it,” sadly I was not the overall winner of the Reliant Kite Relay. That distinction was bestowed upon Colleen Coyle of WFAA who’s charity was the SPCA. If someone was going to cross the line first, I guess I’m glad it was her since I’m such a pet lover.

Jennifer Buxton of Real Posh Mom, Colleen Coyle of WFAA (winner) and me. Can we keep the costumes?

It wasn’t all running and playing dress up. Reliant also had their mini house on site to demonstrate the uses of energy and how you can be install energy saving devices to monitor and control your energy-sucking appliances. Totally interactive, you could turn the many electric devices on via control pad and witness their energy usage. It was a real eye opener. If you see this mobile “home” (with fake oven – Bianca checked), be sure to take a peak inside.

The Reliant sponsored media event was the kick-off to the 2nd Annual Trinity River Wind Festival the following day. I hate that I missed the actual festival due to a prior commitment, plus the churning Harry Potter like skies above my house made it seem like a not great idea. (I learned a little something from the Ben Franklin experience!) It definitely has priority placement on my schedule for next year – besides, I have this fabulous Delta Ghost Kite to fly now. Thank you Reliant!

Loving this big Delta kite! Thank you Reliant!

Special thanks to MommyUpgrade.com contributor Bianca (@texasbjeweled) for taking the photos (many more here on Flickr) and helping to represent for the MMRF. And for you other competitors, watch out for next year’s Reliant Kite Relay – I’ll be studying my wind facts and Ben Franklin moves!
