Spider Rice Krispies Treats

spider-rice-kripies

Three year old girls generally do not like spiders.

Of any kind.

That’s why I told the Princess Cupcake we were making Rice Krispies treats first. Then I told her they would be spider ones.

PC: “But I don’t like spiders.”

Me: “These are pretend spiders. We’re making them out of Rice Krispies treats.”

PC: “Pa-tend spiders?”

Me: “Yes, yummy pretend spiders. And you can put the face on them.”

PC: “Put a FACE on the spiders?”

Me: “Yes, with marshmallows.”

PC: “I LIKE marshmallows”

But she doesn’t like spiders so she’s a tough sell. She ditched me and I was left to heat up the butter and marshmallows, and stir in the Cocoa Rice Krispies solo. Strawberry Shortcake’s latest adventure was waaay more important than mom’s crazy idea to make spiders. I mean really.

She did eventually come back to see what I was still doing right about the time I realized I had no waxed paper to smush the molten Rice Krispies mixture into the pan.

Yes, I used my hands. Yes, I have a kitchen full of other things that I could have used but I like to live on the edge. The scalding edge.

Here’s how to make your own creepy crawlies:

  • Follow the recipe on the box to make your Rice Krispies treats. Use waxed paper to protect hands while mushing the rice krispies and marshmallow mixture into the pan.
  • Use a round cookie cutter to cut out your spider bodies from your pan of Rice Krispies treats
  • Push a lollipop stick into the top of the spider.
  • Push pretzels into the sides of the spider for legs. I used 4 on each side. After breaking about a dozen mini pretzel sticks this way, I wised up and used a chopstick to start the hole for each leg in the spider. Viola, no more broken pretzels.
  • Cut mini-mashmallows in half. Then have your helper mash them with a fondant rolling pin — or their hands work just as well. Once mashed flat, press marshmallow circles into spider body.
  • You could use any candy for fangs, but since the Cupcake LOVES marshmallows, we kept with the mini-marshmallows. To mix it up a bit, we used colored marshmallows. And not the crazy key lime flavored marshmallows rolled in candy. Just old-school, hot chocolate mini-marshmallows. I halfed each one and then cut into fang shapes.
  • Take a food writer and have the little ones draw the pupils on the marshmallow eyes of the spiders.
  • Ditch the fangs and let your little artist draw on a mouth. Or eyebrows. Or whatever.

There you have it! Halloween recipe for Spider Rice Krispies Treats.

Couple things I’d do differently –

  1. 1. No offense to the Campfire Marshmallow people, but I wouldn’t use their brand to make the treats. They didn’t melt very well (which is why they are probably the best marshmallows for camping!) and they were way too white once all mixed together with the cereal. And kinda tough. Stick with Jet Puffed. I’ve never had a problem with them.
  2. 2. Since we’re talking marshmallowy goodness, if you can find the chocolate marshmallows, go for those. The color will blend in better with the Coco Krispies. If not, you could add coco powder or chocolate drink mix to the melted marshmallows to keep the brown consistent.
  3. 3. Get additional food writer colors. My little one enjoyed drawing on the rice krispies bodies most of all, and is really into drawing lips but sadly, we didn’t have any red. In fact all I had was black. Alternatively, more candy shapes for spider features would be good. Or decorator icing. That could be fun if your little ones can work the application.
  4. 4. You could also switch out the pretzels with string licorice, but you might need to dip in frosting or chocolate to make it stick.
  5. 5. You can also use Cocoa Puffs, like Cookies & Cups did (and the inspiration for this post – thank you!)
  6. 6. If you’re still feeling owly from your s’mores, you can also turn this into owls. See Cookies & Cups for examples.

You’ll notice there are no photos of the Cupcake enjoying her spider treats. That’s because she is not interested in eating spiders, thank you very much. Because three year old girls do not like spiders. Of any kind.

Eeewwwww.

  1. What if you dipped 1 side (the face) in PINK candy melts to make a pink spider? Do you think princess would help and eat it then? …I’ve got pink on the brain! 🙂

    • That’s a GREAT idea! You’d think that would have occurred to me since I took our leftover Orange candy melts from the pumpkin truffles and spread it on the extra pieces of Rice Krispie Treats that didn’t make it into the circles. DUH! But, 1) Yes, she would eat it then. 2) It would be easier for her to color on as well. GENIUS! Thanks for the suggestion!
