I had a conference at the Gaylord last weekend and discovered something I never knew about: The Gaylord Texan kids summer program rocks! Not just kids staying in the hotel, but any kid. Local kids. Even your kids.
They’ve got the whole Wizard of Oz theme going on, and you can follow the yellow brick road to all the fun. Why not be a tourist in your own hometown?
This is what initially got my attention.
It’s the Kids Craft Corner where kids can select either a Wizard of Oz cookie decorating kit, or a custom canvas to paint.
There are a number of canvases to choose from.
And plenty of space to get your art on.
The Craft Corner is open Friday (4 p.m. to 8 p.m.), Saturday (12 p.m. to 6 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 2 p.m) through September 7th. It costs $19.99 +tax for either the cookie kit or the canvas, or you can do both for $35.99 +tax. You can purchase tickets on site or through GaylordTexanTickets.com.
The fun doesn’t stop there. They also have Junior Chefs Camp at Zeppole Restaurant! The Cupcake is such a fan of the Food Network, I think she’d love these. There are three classes on three different dates from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
June 13: Make your own pizza with handmade dough, sauce and salad with balsamic dressing. The class is led by Executive Chef Marchesi.
July 11: Create pulled pork quesadillas, tacos and corn. Become a a BBQ Champion with Executive Chef Hartline.
August 1: Make BBQ, buffalo, and mango jerk chicken wings, complete with blue cheese and lime cilantro ranch. This class is led by Executive Chef Stalters.
The cost is $90 per child age 8 – 16, but it also includes lunch for 2 parents or guardians at the end of the class!
There are a few more summer fun events to tell you about:
- Summer Movies of Oz: Every Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday (7 p.m.) through September 7th, the Gaylord will be showing OZ the Great and Powerful, or The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz, and Return to Oz for free. Concessions are at a fee.
- Friday Night Fireworks: Every Friday night (through Sepember 7), you can view the fireworks for free from the garage (there is a fee to park). The DJ party starts at 8:30 p.m., the fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m.
- Lost Treasure of Oz Scavenger Hunt: Every day at any time, you can help the Munchkins of Oz find their treasures that have been blown all over the resort. You’ll get a prize at the end! Cost is $12.
- Meet the Characters of Oz: Wednesdays – Sundays at various times you can meet and take photos from your favorite Oz characters. It’s free and takes place all over the resort. Hours are: Wednesday/Thursday 5:30 – 8:30; Friday 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
