AdvoCare’s Champion’s Festival
WHAT: The must-attend Labor Day weekend event will include a Champions Challenge 5K, a full lineup of artists, food and drinks from local hotspots and more happening all day. The Champions Challenge is a grueling 5K obstacle course designed to challenge even the toughest of athletes, completed by teams of first responders and Army personnel.

WHEN: 9:00 a.m., Saturday, September 1, 2018

WHERE: Lake Viridian, 1001 Viridian Park Ln. Arlington, TX 76040

COST: $8.00-$25.00.  Purchase tickets.

The festival will serve as a prelude to the 2018 AdvoCare Classic the following day at AT&T Stadium, pitting Louisiana State University against the University of Miami (see information about the Advocare Classic below). A portion of ticket proceeds will be donated to the Nancy Lieberman Foundation.

10th Annual Bedford Blues & BBQ

Join performers and pitmasters from across the country for three days of live music and barbecue contests and tasting.

WHAT: Live music begins Friday at 6:00 p.m. and includes Samantha Fish, Chubby Carrier and Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials. Headliners include Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band (Sunday) and Tab Benoit (Saturday).

Sample BBQ during the BBQ Triple Play competition between the International Bar-B-Que Cookers Association, Kansas City Barbeque Society, and the Steak Cookoff Association. Tastings take place on Saturday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and 3:00-5:00 on Sunday. A marketplace will also feature more than 70 artisans, craft, and commercial vendors.

WHEN: 6:00 – 10:00 p.m., Friday, August 31 – Sunday, September 2, 2018

COST: Admission and parking are complimentary on “Free for All Friday.” Tickets are $7 online and $10 at the gate on Saturday and Sunday. Sorry, no pets, coolers or tents allowed. Chairs and blankets are okay. Purchase tickets.

Texas Rangers vs. Minnesota and Post Game Fireworks

WHAT: Enjoy a Texas Rangers game at Globe Life Park, a 48,114-seat open-air. After the final pitch, keep your seats for a fireworks display.

Dallas Arboretum Dollar Day

 WHAT: Enjoy one of the last staycations of the summer at the Dallas Arboretum and Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden. Splash in toad corners, picnic under the shade of Pecan Grove and get cool in the cooling mists of the Palmer Fern Dell. There will also be $1 food items available, including hot dogs, small drinks, and smoothies.

LEGOLAND Ultimate Kids Vs. Grown-Ups Imagination Build-Off Challenge

WHAT: Who’s more creative – kids or adults? LEGOLAND Discovery Center finds the answer with the Ultimate Kids Vs. Grown-Ups Imagination Build-Off Challenge. Recent studies have shown that creativity declines with age and kids have the upper hand when it comes to imaginative play. To put this to the test, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Dallas/Fort Worth is challenging kids and adults to go head-to-head and battle it out in the Ultimate Kids Versus Grown-Ups Imagination Build-Off Challenge to determine who reigns supreme when it comes to creative play: the kids or the grown-ups.

Practice your skills by creating vehicles, buildings and animals out of LEGO bricks in the LEGO Racers Build & Test, LEGO Friends Heartlake City or Cool Creations play areas. Then take on the Ultimate Kids Versus Grown-Ups Imagination Build-Off Challenge judged by the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Master Model Builder from noon to 4 p.m. Every half hour, kids and adults will be given 15 minutes to show off their imagination and building skills by creating a vehicle, building or animal out of LEGO bricks. Winning builds will be selected based on originality and creative talents, and be entered to win a family four-pack of annual passes.

Labor Day Weekend Dino Fest at Perot Museum

WHAT: Celebrate all things dinosaur at Perot Museum’s new Paleo Lab. Enjoy fossil digs, live music and a beer garden on the plaza, live bird (modern-day dinosaur) interactions, T. rex sports challenges, face painting, trivia games, and paleo demos. Cozy up to life-size, 3D dinos on an interactive screen in the lobby for the ultimate photo opp.

Labor of Love Homebrew Festival

 WHAT: This 7th annual Labor Day weekend festival celebrates homebrews and the Dallas-Fort Worth homebrew teams that make them.

Sample unique brews, enjoy live music, games and food trucks. The festival is kid and dog-friendly.

NOTE: To sample beer, state law requires that you purchase (in advance) a homebrew membership.

WHAT: The 2018 AdvoCare Classic kicks off the college football season with a matchup between the University of Miami Hurricanes and Louisiana State University Tigers. This 2018 opener between he Hurricanes and Tigers will mark the first regular season meeting between the two schools since 1988.

73rd Garland Labor Day Parade and Festivities

WHAT:  Community parade featuring local bands, sports groups and floats winding through the streets of downtown Garland. The parade route starts at Glenbrook and Ave. D, travels north on Glenbrook, east on Main to 5th St. then north to Austin. A classic car show will take place following the parade at the Square.

Kids’ Iron Chef-style BBQ Competition: Kids ages 10-18 can register to compete. $25 registration includes food, supplies, grills, tools, apron, and mittens. Entrants can keep their BBQ tools, apron, and mittens as souvenirs.

Blue Star Museums: Free Admission for Military

WHAT: Texas’ three presidential libraries, including the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas, will offer free admission to active duty U.S. military personnel, including National Guard and Reserve, and their families.

View the new exhibit “First Ladies: Style of Influence.” Other highlights include “A Nation Under Attack” recalling the events of Sept. 11, 2001, as well as multimedia clips blending art, history, and entertainment.
