Elf on a Shelf Backseat drivers

The level of difficulty in finding the elf on a shelf is directly correlated to the number of minutes you are late depositing your child to school during the month of December.

Evidenced in our elf on a shelf first foray into the automobile mischief this morning.

I thought the Princess Cupcake might break down in tears when she couldn’t find Chintz and Jewel. She even went into the backyard and on the front porch in her pajamas (in 45 degrees no less) to peek about to find them. She gave up on both front and back door options when she realized how cold brick is on bare feet in December.

The whole missing elf thing had an upside, it afforded some quality conversations about the implications of being late.

“People depend on you when you’re going to be somewhere at a particular time. If you aren’t there, they are disappointed. That’s how your teacher feels when you’re late for school.” I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to explain the importance of a timely departure — something which alludes us most days of the week, no matter how early I get up in the morning to usher her out the door.

But alas, all her concerns vanished when she climbed into the car and found our elf on a shelf team, Chintz and Jewel, with sunglasses on and seated next to her in the brand new booster seat in the backseat of my car. (Note pink polka dot bow)

The pillow helps them fit under the seatbelt properly – you know, to be safe.

Those sneaky elf on a shelf must have heard her talking with her Daddy about how desperately she wanted a booster seat to ride in, and not a car seat anymore (the true sign of coming of age). She instantly forgave them for hiding so well and chatted happily with them on the way to school.
