Frisco Police Department – K9 Officer Cali

frisco police station

Frisco Police Department introduces new  K9 Officer Cali , thanks to a $40,000 donation from Elevate Life Church.

Cali is a beautiful black, 3 year old German shepherd who serves not only as a K9 officer, but as a narcotics dog.

Her partner is Officer Jacob Sample and though they are all business on the clock, she does get to go home to be with his family at night. When she retires, her number one job will be family pet, but until then, those two have a lot of work to do to keep our streets safe.

Frisco's K9 Officer Cali

Cali came to north Texas via Germany and Mississippi. Like blind dating, the two officers initially met through Hub City Canine Consultants last November, and Sample chose Cali because she had the best disposition to match his personality. They trained for 5 weeks in Mississippi before returning to Frisco where the pair now work 8 hour shifts together (mostly at night), and they train with other area K9 officer teams 8 hours every week.

Cali’s patrol vehicle has special features that sense when the car is too hot. When it reaches a preset temperature, the windows come down and the officer is alerted. The vehicle also has a remote control that Office Sample can activate, to release Cali in the event he’s in trouble or needs her quick assistance. She can run really fast too. Although she hasn’t been clocked yet, Frisco Police estimate about 33 mph. To give you a point of reference, the National Council on Strength and Fitness estimate the average human can run at the speed of 15 miles per hour for short periods of time. Basically, you don’t want Cali chasing you if you’re a bad guy.

To help protect Cali from the bad guys, our local Girl Scout service unit gathered donations during cookie season to pay for a ballistics vest for Cali. It will weighs about 4 pounds, and provide the necessary extra protection she’ll need. In thanks, the Frisco Police Department invited Cali’s benefactors to the station to meet officer Sample and see Cali close up.

The scouts all had some great questions like, “How much does Cali eat?” (8 cups of food a day) and “How much does Cali weigh?” (65 pounds now, only 50 when Officer Sample got her!). I’m sure they were disappointed that they didn’t get to pet Cali – who seemed a bit unsure about a room packed full of little people – but they took it in stride and posed for a few photos with Officer Sample instead.

It’s great to know these two officers are helping keep our city safe at night. Thanks Elevate Life and Frisco PD!
