Fun at Chamberlain Studios of Self Defense Class

“And if my day wasn’t bad enough, now I’m afraid to go home,” Big Daddy said as he outstretched his phone to coworkers to show them this video.

Yes, that would be yours truly, breaking my very first board. I had no idea that I could do that – but hey, what a rush! Bucket list: check!

As you can see, I was at Chamberlain’s Studios of Self Defense in Dallas. We spent the morning at a sushi, self-defense and sake event where we were learning – and trying – a few defensive moves that we hope we’ll never have to use. (On the flip side, the sake education will most certainly come in handy however.)

That’s the thing about self-defense courses, right? You “hope” you’ll never have to use what you learn, but what WOULD you do in a desperate situation? I’d like to think I’m a bit better prepared from this cliff notes version of how to defend oneself. It was a terrific eye-opener, and just left me thirsty for more. Yes, of both.

I’ve always steered clear of martial arts studios concerned that once they got you in the door, you’d be too afraid to say no to committing to the whole belt journey — and honestly, my schedule doesn’t allow for that these days nor is it on my current to-do list. Interestingly enough, Chamberlains has loads of mini-classes like the “Brew Ha-Ha brewery fitness workout” or the FREE women’s self defense seminar that you can go to, without the rigors of a full blown path to black belt. And that’s something I can get excited about. Actually, I am excited about. I’m going to bring back my whole girl scout troop! (No, not to the brewery deal, I know where you were going.)

I promise if you check them out, you won’t feel intimidated.

Chamberlain Studios Kids Karate Summer Camps 2019

Okay well, the bald guy might scare you a little if he’s not smiling but I swear he is about 85% of the time and he’s really nice so it’s cool.

The eponymous studio is run by Professor Nick Chamberlain, who is a 10th degree black belt, a chiropractor, owner of the 35 year old school, and… he makes pottery. In fact, all of Chamberlain’s second degree black belt students are gifted a sake pottery set hand crafted by the very talented Professor. Given that he also educated us ladies on how sake is made and its relevance to the different price points, I’d say he’s a bit of a renaissance man. And he gives free classes to the ladies at Genesis Women’s Shelter (and other similar facilities) to build their sense of empowerment and help them to protect themselves. I like that. I like that a lot.

I learned loads (and had a lot of fun doing it) while I was at Chamberlains Studio and I think you will too. I took a video during a portion of it. Clear your room, put on your stretchy pants and work out with it because this could save you from a very bad situation one day.

Here are my major take-aways from the event:

  • Hands up and turn sideways so you minimize your target
  • Hit at nose, eyes, mouth, face, groin with your open hand
  • Yell “No!” not “fire.” No one pays attention to “fire” anymore.
  • Depending on proximity, you should either push kick to someone away, or use a snapping kick to the groin, or hit.
  • Everything you do is based on 3 simple techniques: hand jabs, push kicks and groin knees.
  • 95% of self-defense is not putting yourself in a bad situation.
  • Stilettos are a weapon. Use them.
  • Sake is made from rice. The cheap bottles are yucky (which is why restaurants warm it up). The more the rice is processed, the smoother, better tasting and expensive it is!

Want to get to know the Chamberlains’ Studio peeps? Here are a some upcoming Chamberlain’s events that you can go to and see for yourself how fun self-defense can be!
