Mess-free Easter Egg Hack!

Decorating eggs is a mess.

Easter eggs and stained hands go hand in hand, right? Whether you’re dyeing real eggs with food coloring or you are decorating fake eggs with decoupage or paint, or my favorite, alcohol inks.

Is there a Mess-free Easter Egg hack?

Is there a way to create beautiful Easter eggs without covering your tables with paint and wearing old shirts and aprons to protect yourself from wayward permanent dye? Yes, yes there is.

Use Temporary tattoos.

I gave it a try and the results are beautiful!

It might be the best and most beautiful mess-free way to color eggs!

I ordered my temporary tattoos from Tattly on Amazon. Tattly makes high-quality temporary tattoos, designed by professional artists. Made with vegetable-based ink, they are FDA approved, and they ship worldwide! Tattly has a number of beautiful watercolor images you can use. I chose butterflies for my test eggs. After creating these eggs, I found this Pinterest board full of egg images using Tattly tattoos, and I’m going to have to go back for more and step up my game! Here are a few that you might like:

What you do:

It really couldn’t be more simple. Apply the tattoo like you would on your skin!

  • When you’re working with an egg, the surface is smaller and curved so it’s best to choose a smaller design. You may want to cut apart the designs on your sheet it they are too large.
  • Peel the protective clear top sheet off of your tattoo. This is a REALLY important step. If you forget to do it, the tattoo will adhere to the sheet and not the egg. Don’t ask why I know this.
  • Position the tattoo on the egg where you’d like it to be.
  • Moisten your sponge with water and cover the tattoo.
  • Hold it in place for 30 seconds.
  • Peel away the paper and admire your work!
  • Add more tattoos to cover the egg as much as you like.

This would be a great craft for young and old. Order a bunch of tattoos in bulk from the party store and give kids a theme for their eggs! Imagine how much cleaner your kitchen will be when they’re just working with water!
