Mom Pride Moments

I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day holiday weekend. 🙂 We made a mad-dash to Natchitoches (and of course we squeezed in some Natchitoches Meat Pies!) , Louisiana. And by “mad-dash” I mean we were there for all of 36 hours and are already on our way back now.

It was a fast trip, but noteworthy as a Mom. We’ve reached a new maturity milestone for the Princess Cupcake.

The Cupcake was out of school on Friday, so while I worked and got my own things together, I asked her to please pack her own bags. She is 5 now after all. Truthfully, I just wanted her to be occupied so I could get some stuff done…

I put down a Vera Bradley Weekender bag and a Disney Princess rolling back-pack in front of her and explained that we would be gone for two nights and two days, she needed some pajamas and panties and clothes to wear. She could bring whatever toys she wanted, so long as they fit in the backpack.

In the last minute rush out of the door, I didn’t inventory her choices – I know, what was I thinking?! I’ve never had her pack her own clothes before, that’s a fashion disaster waiting to happen. Never-the-less, the Vera bag (the one for clothes) looked pretty full so I hedged my bets there was something wearable in there and zipped it shut. She was wearing pajamas already, no need to change out of those since we’d be arriving past her bedtime. I did notice that the hairbrush and toothbrush hadn’t made it into the bag and so I quickly tossed those into the outside pocket.

Saturday morning came and I asked the Cupcake to get dressed. She disappeared and came back wearing a gold skirt, yellow shirt and pink espadrilles. Her matching headband was yellow with a pink flower.

Huh.

I was a little taken aback and how easy this was. She had never worn that combination together, but it actually worked rather nicely. I wouldn’t have thought to pack that.

Saturday night, I asked her to go put her pajamas on. She came out wearing different pajamas than the night before.

Wow. Why doesn’t this happen during the school week?!? This is like, easy.

I couldn’t decide what I was more struck with, the fact that she was growing up so fast, or the curiosity of what exactly she had packed in her bag!

As soon as she fell asleep I pulled everything out to see that she brought:

  • 3 pairs of shoes
  • 9 headbands
  • 7 panties
  • 5 pj bottoms
  • 2 pj tops (not matching)
  • 1 nightgown
  • 1 skirt
  • 1 shirt – short sleeves
  • 1 shirt – long sleeves
  • 2 t-shirts
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 1 winter scarf
  • 1 dress
  • 1 Chapstick
  • 4 Barbies
  • 7 Barbie movies
  • headphones
  • 1 glow pillow
  • 1 quilt (she actually made it in preschool this year)
  • Her favorite blankie

It was a little moment of Mom Pride. A little jewel to save in my library of momeries – special mom memories.  I think you know what I mean.

She told me this morning after getting ready all by herself in a perfectly nice dress and matching shoes, AGAIN, that she brought the jeans, blue long-sleeve shirt and scarf just in case we had cold weather, and that she wanted to bring yellow shoes for her skirt but since she didn’t have any, she thought that the pink ones would be nice.

I know I stared at her a bit too long (sheer disbelief that this is my baby little girl) before I gave her a big hug.

Have you had a little moment of Mom Pride recently? What was it?
