Reliant Home Run Derby

There’s really nothing better than a 70-ish sunny spring day in Texas. Unless you’re sitting at the ballpark on a 70-ish sunny spring day in Texas.

That’s what me and the Princess Cupcake got to do yesterday.

I hear you, “But the Rangers were out of town?!”

In the ultimate mash-up, we got to watch the Dallas Cowboys pound some leather on the field at the Globe Life Park in Arlington (formerly the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington — I know, I was confused too when I tried to check in on foursquare). The guys donated their time and their bats for the 3rd Annual Reliant Home Run Derby benefitting the Salvation Army.

It was fun to see these 8 footballers and Coach Garrett swing for the fences, especially since some admitted they’d never really played baseball or it had been since middle school since they’d run the bases. No offense Coach Garrett, but you need to stick with football, for sure.

It was also heartwarming to see the rest of the team watch the Home Run Derby with the Salvation Army Youth group.

Oh yeah, but not all of the rest of the team. The rookies were “shagging” the outfield to catch fly balls, but sadly none cleared the real outfield wall so they actually had a lot of work to do.

When it was all done, the championship round between Cowboys safety Barry Church and tight end Jason Witten resulted in Reliant donating a total of $50,000 to the Salvation Army, and Barry Church coming out on top. Church contributed $8,400 to the total, Witten $8,300. DeMarco Murray finished 3rd with a respectable $4,300. Here are some more photos from the event.
