Sewing Camp is SEW FUN! (Review)

If you’ve every tried to teach your daughter how to sew on your sewing machine, you know that it requires a bottle of wine or two to calm your nerves. The sharp needle and your fear that she’ll puncture her finger, the peddle that she either floor like she’s racing a yellow light or doesn’t push hard enough to even make it go, the picking the presser foot up and moving the fabric three inches to the left to correct a wayward line….

I’m not saying that I’m impatient or anything, but it is hard to let go and let her create. Sometimes. Until now. Now it’s very easy.

I’m thrilled to have found SEW FUN STUDIOS. It’s a crafty mom’s answer to introductory sewing for your little girls (or boys – no reason boys can’t do this too. Check out threadtheory.ca and you’ll see!). And no wine required.

The Cupcake enrolled in the SEW-A-FRIEND summer camp with Kaitlyn Baeten and Sew Fun Studios – and she LOVED it. She loved it so much that she got up early every day ready to go. She cried and cried when she had to miss a day. She asked me if she could please go all the next week too and it’s no wonder. Each day they worked on creating a stuffed animal. She brought home a snake, owl, penguin, bunny, and a pillow. And they were all just so stinkin’ cute! Look!

I think she really loves that cupcake fabric!

What’s great – other than Kaitlyn’s seemingly infinite reserve of patience – is that the machines the girl’s learn on really are tricked out to keep little fingers safer. They are speed controlled and the needle drops into the fabric when you stop sewing, both of which builds their confidence and makes it a whole lot less scary for moms and them.

The Cupcake didn’t realize she was doing was learning spatial and relational thinking while she was following step-by-step project instructions. She was using math as she measured. She was developing fine motor skills as she cut her patterns and created her masterpiece. She even had to use some creative problem solving when things didn’t go quite as planned. She was developing self-confidence and giving herself an outlet for self-expression, and creating keepsakes that she’s incredibly proud of.

She did realize she was learning a lot about the machine and sewing basics. In fact, she showed me the built in thread cutter that’s on my Singer that I had all forgotten about. She relished the creative process of picking her fabrics (cupcakes, polka dots, cupcakes, polka dots — I swear there were MANY to choose from!) and making something totally on her own and totally unique.

Sew Fun Studios Sew A Friend

I’m a huge fan of sewing camp and sewing classes. Kaitlyn also offers birthday parties (she brings EVERYTHING TO YOU), and holiday workshops. I plan to get her involved with my Brownie Troop and even our Destination Imagination team!

Here’s just a sample of upcoming themes for workshops and classes for ages 7 – 14, but check her website to find more details – or contact her directly to set up a private event or class.

Sew Fun Studio classes are held at either Frisco Athletic Center or Aspiring Minds Montessori in Frisco and prices range from $60 – $345 depending on the length of the class. Some classes are just one day, others run every day for a week, others are once a week over several weeks. There are no “class packets” to buy – she has everything for you: fabric, machine, thread, patterns.

I think you’ll agree that “SEW FUN” is so fun indeed.

You can follow Sew Fun Studios on social media: Facebook (Frisco location), Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

I was offered a free summer camp in exchange for a review of SEW FUN STUDIOs camps. We had a fantastic experience and all opinions are my own.

  1. This is a fantastic way of teaching young girls how to sew using their hands and creative minds. It must have been a very fun experience for Cupcake to take part in making such cute things.
