Barbie is Moving Tour featuring MegaBloks is Pinktastic Fun

Pink Barbie Truck

I grew up without Barbies.

Shocking, I KNOW..

Probably the saddest day I remember was my 5th birthday when a friend gave me gymnast Barbie and it was promptly confiscated. I shudder to wonder how many I received and never laid eyes on. I was devastated, and I remember crying for weeks about it.

A kindergartener does NOT understand why any mom would think Barbie is detrimental to a girl’s self-worth.

Fast forward a few decades later and I’m still ticked off about the whole thing.

So no. I didn’t issue a Barbie ban in my house. Heck, I was ready to play with them…

Finally.

My mother would roll over in her grave if she saw the pile of Barbie movies and tubs full of Barbies that are ever-present in our home. She believed that Barbie wasn’t a good role model for young girls.

I think she’d change her mind today.

Movie Star Barbie

Barbie’s many movies are a testament to bravery, teamwork and kindness to others – while of course uniting against the evil in the world. I’m good with that.

Barbie iOS apps teach young girls they can be whatever they want to be by playing games where they pretend to have different careers. Yep, I’m good with that too.

Barbie’s addictive Mega Blocks are a sneaky way to get young girls to be mini-engineers and to follow visual Barbie Checkin directions. They think they’re building a Barbie dream house, I think they using the creative and problem-solving side of their brain. I’m way good with that.

But enough about me. When I learned the Barbie is Moving tour was coming through Dallas, I knew the Cupcake would want to check it out. The website barbieismoving.com itself seems a little vague, so I’ll give you the low-down here.

First of all: it’s free. Let’s just get that question out of the way.

Second of all, it’s pinktastic fun.

There are super cute displays everywhere — even grown-ups were posing in front of them. Oh, and did I mention it was FATHER’S DAY? Yes, there were lots of dads there too.

There are four main activities for the tour, at least the one in Dallas that we attended but they could be different in your location. Once you get past the check-in

(yes, you have to sign a media release, bring your drivers license), you’re awarded a super cute Barbie tote with a DVD of 4 episodes from Barbie’s show. Worth the trip to the event in and of itself IMO.

There are pink girly photo opps galore. I want that pink poodle for my office.

Next she was invited to make a dress for her Barbie. The Barbie Is Moving crew have these cool fashion plates for girls to create their own style, print it on a white dress, then markers to color it in.

All this happens beneath a pink tent with chandeliers, of course. She loved this craft, I am going to have to get her the kit from Mattel. (This one or this one.)

The big feature of the Barbie is Moving tour is the fashion show. Girls are invited via pink carpet, to come inside a pink “mansion” where they can put on frilly skirts, rhinestone glasses, and feather boas. Seats line Barbie’s fashion runway for the proud parents. Dolled up girls strut their stuff to Barbie theme songs, watch themselves on TV, and get an adorable commemorative photo.

Notice I said, “Girls,” as in “other girls.” My girl wouldn’t do it. I even offered to do it with her. I went so far as to offer to do it instead of her and let her take photos of me (Mom is rolling in her grave again), and still no. She was not feeling the love for the Barbie paparazzi today. Humph.

She was however, really into the last part of the Barbie is Moving tour. This magical pink tent is where they have the full MegaBloks Barbie house on display, AND MegaBloks for the girls to play with.

After building a little room for the house, Barbie’s team gave her a gift box with a MegaBloks Barbie in it (think Lego MiniFigs).

And she got to pick out accessories for her mini-Barbie. They also gave her stickers, a paper game, and coupons for MegaBloks Barbie merchandise of which she now wanted the complete set, of course. (See more at Barbie.megabloks.com)

Barbie Building is Glam These Barbie MegaBloks are actually pretty cool, I don’t fault her for wanting them at all. Each room in the Barbie mansion is a modular unit. Girls [and moms :)] can build their “dream home” however they like, complete with working elevator and chandeliers. And you know how I love chandeliers…

I was impressed. The Cupcake got a set of the Barbie MegaBloks for her birthday so I already knew they were compatible with the Lego Friends (which she also likes), but I didn’t know how extensive the Barbie line was.

Sadly, the Barbie is Moving tour is gone from Dallas, but there are lots more cities on her trip. Definitely check it out and send me a photo of YOU on the runway!
